The 6Rs of Self-CareĀ

Psych Pocket Series 🧠 · Vol. 1

Self-Care Is More Than a ā€œVibeā€.

It’s a strategy.

When self-care is used only to soothe, we may feel better temporarily, yet remain the same. When it’s used only to push and improve, we risk exhaustion and burnout.

Real self-care lives in the balance.

That balance is the foundation of the 6Rs Framework.

Each domain holds two essential sides:

  • Comfort, to support recovery

  • Challenge, to expand capacity

Growth happens when both are present.

[Comfort + Challenge → Growth]

What are the 6Rs?

Rest — Recharging the Foundation

Rest is not simply stopping; it’s allowing your nervous system to reset.

Comfort:Ā Sleep, pausing, reducing stimulation

Challenge:Ā Letting yourself rest even when guilt or ā€œproductivity pressureā€ shows up

Growth:Ā Improved focus, emotional regulation, and nervous system resilience

šŸ’” Reflection: When was the last time you rested without guilt? What would it look like to allow that today?

Relaxation — Regulating the Nervous System

Relaxation is not avoidance. It’s learning how to stay present with tension.

Comfort:Ā Gentle breathing, warm baths, calming music

Challenge:Ā Sitting with uncomfortable emotions or using breathwork under stress instead of distracting or escaping

Growth:Ā Increased tolerance for stress and confidence in handling emotional intensity

šŸ’” Reflection: What tension have you been avoiding? How might you face it safely today?

Recreation — Expanding Energy and Curiosity

Enjoyment restores energy, but growth often begins at the edge of comfort.

Comfort:Ā Familiar hobbies and activities you already enjoy

Challenge:Ā Trying something new or unfamiliar that brings uncertainty or fear

Growth:Ā Confidence, curiosity, and renewed vitality as you expand your comfort zone.

šŸ’” Reflection: What excites you and scares you at the same time? Is there a small step you could take this week?

Relationship — Connection Through Honesty

Relationships can soothe us, but they also ask for courage.

Comfort:Ā Being with people who feel safe and supportive

Challenge:Ā Setting boundaries, expressing needs, or having difficult conversations

Growth:Ā Deeper intimacy, emotional resilience, and relational confidence

šŸ’” Reflection: Who could you show up more authentically with today, even if it feels uncomfortable?

Reflection — Turning Experience Into Insight

Reflection helps us integrate, not just move on.

Comfort:Ā Gratitude practices and acknowledging progress

Challenge:Ā Looking at your "shadow"—mistakes, regrets, or patterns you’d rather ignore.

Growth:Ā Clarity, self-awareness, and the ability to make different choices

šŸ’” Reflection: What experience might offer insight if you allowed yourself to reflect on it?

Routine — Structure With Flexibility

Routine provides safety. Adaptability creates growth.

Comfort:Ā Predictable rhythms for sleep, meals, and work

Challenge:Ā Introducing small intentional changes—a new habit, a shifted schedule, mini-goals that stretch you

Growth:Ā Adaptability, confidence in uncertainty, and a stronger sense of agency

šŸ’” Reflection: What small change could you make this week to grow within your routine?

Self-care is not about avoiding discomfort. It’s about choosing the kind of discomfort that strengthens you, intentionally, safely, and with support.

Over time, what once felt difficult can become empowering. That is real self-care.

šŸ’¬ Which R do you want to focus on this week to care for yourself while gently stretching your capacity?
